• Early research focused on the biosystematics and developmental ecology of insects.
• From the early eighties, experimental community ecology, particularly the interactions between insects and plants, has been the key focus. Research questions have been addressed through long-term manipulative field experiments, in a range of terrestrial habitats (temperate and tropical).
• Multi-trophic interactions, especially those between above- and below-ground biota.
• Effects of environmental and land use change on species interactions, including climate change Restoration of habitats, by innovative management techniques, based on empirical science.
• Research into the efficacy of agri-environment schemes to provide sustainable agriculture production, while conserving biodiversity.
