Resumo

Lava tubes such as the ones that occur in the Azores are environments of extreme geochemical conditions where microorganisms may have to develop specific metabolic adaptations in order to proliferate. Recent studies of similar ecosystems resulted in the discovery of new taxonomical groups and microorganisms that produce metabolites with antibiotic properties. We sampled and screened one lava tube on Terceira Island for microorganisms with antibiotic activity. Our results show several strains that are suppressive towards food-borne human pathogens Salmonella typhymurium, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, E. coli obtained from the CITA-A's collection (previously isolated from cheese) and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111, and S. aureus 3DA (obtained from the Veterinary Lab from Terceira) in culture media. Further studies of the isolates will determine their potential as sources of new substances for therapeutic use or as biocides for the food industry.
