Profile:
My main objective in the project is to identify the diversity of microorganisms associated with the microbial mats in the Azorean caves using both culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques. Bacterial cultivation focused on improving our methods to achieve the growth of the “unculturable” fraction of the microbiota, according to a better knowledge of the growth requirements of cave bacteria, is being developed. An evaluation of the antimicrobial pattern against pathogen groups with previously reported resistance to antibiotics, of our cave isolates is being analyzed. For a further identification of these isolates, molecular phylogenetic methodology with the genetic sequence data from the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) will be used.
